FileMaker Cloud for AWS utilizes public key cryptography to secure the login information for your FileMaker Cloud instance.  A vital component of the cryptography is something called a "key pair"

A key pair is typically a small file or files that are used for encrypting and decrypting data.  A "public" key is used to encrypt a piece of data, such as a password, and then the recipient or server uses the "private" key to decrypt the data.  The public and private keys are known as a key pair.

Creating a Key Pair

When creating a FileMaker Cloud for AWS instance, you are required to create and specify a key pair.  A key pair is created by accessing the Amazon EC2 Console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/.  Creating a key pair in the Amazon EC2 Console is as simple as specifying a name for the key pair.  When a key pair is created, a key pair file (.pem file) will be downloaded to your computer.

Important:Do not delete this key pair file. Keep this key pair in a safe place in case you need it in the future. The key pair file cannot be re-download if it gets lost.

NOTE:  In some cases, the key pair file that is downloaded will have a .txt file extension (example: MyPEMFile.pem.txt).  In these cases, it will be necessary to edit the filename and remove the .txt file extension (example: MyPEMFile.pem).

Here are the steps necessary for creating a key pair

1. Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/
2. At the top of the screen, select an applicable region from the available choices.  In most cases you will select the region closest to you geographically.
   
   NOTE:  Key pairs cannot be shared between regions.  For example, if you create a key pair for the US West (Oregon) region, you will not be able to see or use the same key pair in other regions.
3. On the left side of the screen, in the Network & Security section, click Key Pairs
4. Click Create Key Pair
5. Enter a valid name for the key pair and click Create

Importing / Using An Existing Key Pair

If you already have an existing key pair created from a third party tool, that key pair can be imported into the Amazon EC2 Console and used during the configuration of FileMaker Cloud.  The Amazon EC2 Console supports the following key pair formats:

• OpenSSH public key format
• Base64 encoded DER format
• SSH public key file format

NOTE:  The Amazon EC2 Console does not support DSA keys.  Verify that your key pair generator is set up to create RSA keys.

Here are the steps necessary for importing in a supported 3rd party key pair

1. Save the public key to a local file.  The file name extension for this file is not important
2. Save the private key to a different local file and use a .pem file extension.
3. Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/
4. At the top of the screen, select an applicable region from the available choices.  In most cases you will select the region closest to you geographically.
   
   NOTE:  Key pairs cannot be shared between regions.  For example, if you create a key pair for the US West (Oregon) region, you will not be able to see or use the same key pair in other regions.
5. On the left side of the screen, in the Network & Security section, click Key Pairs
6. Click Import Key Pair
7. Click Browse and select the public key file that you saved in Step 1. 
8. Enter a valid name for the key pair and click Import.
