How to Download an Earlier Version of Java
Occasionally, your business may need to access a website application that requires you to install an older version of the Java application. Java's developer, Oracle, recommends against using earlier versions because they lack the latest security updates. However, if you absolutely must have access to a particular website that requires an earlier version, you can download the software directly from Oracle's website.

Navigate to the Oracle Java Archive website (see Resources).

Create a free Oracle Web account by clicking the "Sign In/Register for an Account” link at the top of the page and then clicking the “Sign Up” link. You must enter your name, email address and business contact information, along with a password for the account. Click “Create” when done.

Check your email for a verification email from Oracle. Open the email and click “Account Verification Link.” The link will take you to the sign-in page, where you can sign in and then automatically return to the archive page.

Click on the major version you want to download from the “Java SE” list. For example, choose “Java SE 6” if you want to download any version number ranging from Java 6.0 to Java 6.43. You will select the specific update number on the next page.

Select the update version you want to download. For example, to download Java 6.1, select “Java SE Runtime Environment 6u1.” If the website you are trying to access doesn’t specify a specific update number but specifies a version number such as Java 6, select the one with the highest update number. For example, the latest version of Java 6 is "Java SE Runtime Environment 6u43."

Click the circle next to “Accept License Agreement,” and then click the link next to the Java download file that matches your operating system. For example, if you plan to install the program on a Windows computer, click the link next to “Windows Offline Installation.”

Select “Save File” from the pop-up window to begin the download.

- Many older versions of Java have been shown to be vulnerable to different types of malware attacks, and using them on untrusted websites could put sensitive data on your computer at risk. If you must use an older version, consider disabling it when you aren't using it.
