I suggest you to install the driver in compatibility mode and check if it helps.
Follow the steps below to install the drivers in compatibility with Windows 10.
Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘Properties’.
Click on the ‘Compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 10 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Thanks for trying to assist, I have tried the compatability tab but the newest option on it is windows 8. there is no windows 10 option. To compound matters when I now try to run the drivers my card is not being detected even though it is showing as being enabled in device manager. I have temporarily installed an old card and may wait to see if there are any updates or new drivers that will sort the problem

Hi and thanks to those who tried to assist. Turns out the graphics card had decided to chuck it, just so happened to be at the time of the update!!!. Apologies Microsoft for apportioning you the blame.
Thanks to the nice folks at EVGA a lovely new replacement card is now in residence in my PC
