How to create a GEDCOM file
Converting your family tree to GEDCOM format will not change your original file. Instead, it creates a second file in the GEDCOM format. The exact steps needed to create a GEDCOM file will vary slightly depending on the software package you are using. The following instructions provide the basic process for creating a GEDCOM file.

- In your genealogy program, open the family tree you want to submit to the WorldConnect.
- Click the File drop-down menu.
- Select Save as or Export from the menu. A new file window will display.
- Select the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
- In the Save as type drop-down menu, click the GEDCOM or GED selection.
- Enter the name of the file in the File name field.
- Click the Save button
- If an export confirmation window displays, click the OK button. The family tree is now saved on your computer as a GEDCOM file and is ready to submit to the WorldConnect Project.
- Repeat this process for each family tree you are submitting, giving each a unique file name. Each will need a unique tree ID when submitted to the WorldConnect Project.

Comments and notes
- Submit your GEDCOM as a zip file, if you have that ability. It can substantially reduce your upload time. Zipping a file is a way to compress the file to make it smaller. There are several free zip utilities available on the Internet
- The WorldConnect Project supports most special character sets, such as umlauted vowels.
- You can restrict some information on the living from being submitted with the choices you make when creating your GEDCOM file. Your genealogy program will help you learn how to do this. However, if you remove dates from your GEDCOM export, you may remove the information that WorldConnect living filters need to determine an individual is living. It is usually better to include all your data in your upload, then use the WorldConnect display options to adjust the way your GEDCOM is displayed. That way, you can use your file at WorldConnect as a backup, and if you ever lose your file, you will be able to download a full copy.
- If your program offers you the choice of GEDCOM versions, generally the most current is best.
