Adobe created the portable document format to better allow computer users to share files across programs and computer platforms. PDF files are a great way to get information across to business partners, potential clients and consumers because most computers have a program that can at least read the PDF format. Instead of providing links to outside sources, you can use Adobe Acrobat to embed a video directly within your PDF file. This will increase the chance of a reader playing the video, but it also has some constraints.

Types

Adobe Acrobat works best with SWF, FLV or H.264 video files. These files will play directly in Adobe Reader without any outside media players needed. If your videos are not in any of these formats, a third-party video converter is needed. Software like the Adobe Media Encoder, VLC Media Player and the WinAVI Video Converter will all convert videos to any one of those file types.

PDF Setup

To embed videos, click on the "Tools" menu in Adobe Acrobat X and select the "Advanced Editing" option. In the sub-menu, select the "Movie Tool." Use the cursor to draw a box on the screen for the approximate location of the video. Once the box is made, a pop-up window will appear with options. Click on the "Browse" icon and select the video file. Click on the "Embed Content in Document" box so that it is automatically included in your PDF file without extra downloads needed.

Video Size

The size of a video will effect the size of your PDF file. The smaller the video, the easier it will be for readers to download and view the PDF. A large video file will take up a lot of memory and could delay the PDF pages from loading properly. Use the "Snap to Content Proportions" option in the Add Movie menu so that the video is applied smaller into the PDF. Click on the "Advanced Options" menu and adjust the "Video Quality" to make a smaller file. Preview the video after each change to ensure it keeps the quality that you want.

Extra Settings

Adobe Acrobat features extra settings when adding a video file. The "Set Poster Image From Current Frame" setting allows you to scroll and select the frame that readers will first see before playing the video. By default it selects the center point of the video. Click on the "Advanced Options" to set the playback controls. You can limit the fast forward or rewind buttons on a video so a user can only play it through.
