How to Split a GIF
As you work with digital designs, you may find a need to split graphic image formats, also known as GIFs, for filling certain space requirements or creating a half-and-half look. Use your computer's preinstalled Microsoft Paint program to split a GIF in a few easy steps.
1
Launch Microsoft Paint. Click the small button in the top left of the screen, then click "Open" from the drop-down menu.
2
Browse to where the GIF you want to split is located on your computer. To narrow down files quickly, click the "All Picture Files" drop-down menu in the bottom right corner of the window and select “GIF.”
3
Double-click the GIF to open it in the Paint window. If the GIF is very small, click the "View" tab and "Zoom" to enlarge it for easier splitting. Click the "Home" tab.
4
Click the "Select" button, which looks like a dotted rectangle on the left of the ribbon, and choose “Rectangular selection” from the drop-down menu.
5
Position the cursor in the blue portion of the Paint desktop, then press and hold the left mouse button. Drag the cursor until you select the left half of the GIF, denoted by blue dotted or broken lines. Don’t worry about selecting the blue Paint desktop, as it won’t be part of your final product.
6
Click the "Crop" button on the ribbon. The split appears on the Paint desktop.
7
Click "Paint" in the top left of the screen, choose "Save" and type a new name for the GIF in the File name text box. This ensures your whole original GIF remains available for future use.
8
Click "Save" to save the split GIF. To save a copy of the mirror-image split, or other side, of the GIF, repeat the process.

Tips
- You can also split a GIF from top to bottom by using the Rectangular selection tool to split the top half, then repeat for the bottom half.
Warnings
- In cases of specialty GIFs that move and sparkle -- sometimes called “blinkies” or “glitter graphics” -- this process will destroy those effects. Only do this when you have a flat GIF.
